The Arber design is named after Agnes Arber, a British plant morphologist, anatomist and historian of botany. Her research focused on the flowering grasses, earning her a fellowship of the Royal Society in 1946 as only the third woman to be elected into the famous scientific institution. Arber was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London to recognise her extensive contributions to botanical science, marking her as the first woman to receive such an accolade.
